Sheffield Institute for Studies on Ageing
High priority is being given by governments around the world to support
research into human ageing due to:
- Rising numbers of older people.
- Increasing expectations for a better old
age.
- The reduced capacity of families to provide
care.
- Pressures on public finances.
This field of research draws on many disciplines and requires a co-ordinated
multi-disciplinary approach. The Institute is made up of specialists in gerontological research and training and academics
with active interests in gerontology.

"Proven Strategies to Improve Older People´s Health" is a Eurolink Age Report for the European Commission. The report recommends an integrated approach and highlights the benefits across all sectors.
The Eurolink Report states that a recognised starting point for success in social policy is the coherent formulation
and implementation of a set of reinforcing actions in appropriate areas. It suggests that the dramatic improvements in life
expectancy of the past two centuries in Western Europe are due to a combination of public health legislation, changes in
the physical environment and shifts in public attitude though education and information campaigns.
